“In our high-altitude region, at 3,500 meters, premature births are very common. Many expectant mothers do not receive regular prenatal care and arrive at the hospital only when labor begins, making severe neonatal asphyxia alarmingly frequent. Without access to therapeutic hypothermia or critical equipment like ventilators, we are often forced to transfer babies—or struggle to save them under extremely limited conditions.”
— Dr. Chen, Director of the Department of Neonatology, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture People’s Hospital.
We are thrilled to announce that Ganzi People’s Hospital has been confirmed as the launch site for the Every Baby Rescued (EBR) program. This decision follows a successful field visit from August 22–25nd, 2025, by Dr. Jun Bu and the Head Nurse from Shanghai Children’s Medical Center, alongside the CMF team and interns. Their visit to Aba and Ganzi Prefectures focused on assessing the feasibility of the program through detailed discussions with the provincial health commission and comprehensive quantitative and qualitative analyses.
Nestled in a remote region, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture has a population of approximately 1.1 million. Despite a recent decline in birth rates, many deliveries still take place in primary hospitals, with around 20% of newborns being born outside medical facilities, thus escalating perinatal risks. This situation underscores the urgent need for a robust neonatal care and transport network across the prefecture.
With the launch of the EBR program, Ganzi People’s Hospital is set to significantly enhance its neonatal care capabilities. The program will establish professional teams and transport systems, ensuring safer and more timely care for newborns. This initiative is poised to reduce perinatal risks and improve overall neonatal health throughout the region.
