On April 23rd, a Hong Kong delegation of nine, including Board members, donors, CMF Ambassador Edith Chen and Italian Women’s Association’s Paola de Antonellis, travelled to Pu’er for the official launch of the Pu’er Neonatal Care Unit (NCU) at Pu’er People’s Hospital.

Pu’er is home to 2.4 million people, mostly Yi, Hani, Va and Dai minority people; and where 84% of the population live under the national poverty line. The “center of excellence” at Pu’er People’s Hospital, sponsored by Operation Santa Claus, Capital Group, FABBAS, Credit Suisse and the Italian Women’s Association is the only health facility out of the 524 in Pu’er prefecture that offers neonatal capability. It is positioned to immediately transform the survival rate for any of the 1,900 babies in the hospital requiring intensive care and will serve as the springboard for other programs improving neonatal care for the 29,000 babies born in Pu’er prefecture each year and to any families in financial need.
