Rapid Rollout of Neonatal Resuscitation Training in Gansu: Protecting Life from the First Second!
In April, 18 doctors from program sites in Southern Gansu – Tianshui, Longnan, and Pingliang prefectures – completed Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) training at the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University becoming Masters in NRP. With accreditation from the American Heart Association and American Academy of Pediatrics, this sustainable group of Master Trainers was established to reverse the fate of newborns suffering from asphyxia – the inability to independently breathe – at birth.
By June, these Master Trainers began leading their first local training sessions, reaching 102 healthcare workers across 50 rural hospitals, surpassing program targets by 13%, and reflecting the need in the communities.
Each two-day session blended theory and hands-on practice, equipping frontline staff from remote areas with life-saving neonatal resuscitation skills. This training not only strengthened local capacity but also ensured that newborns could survive from asphyxia, the leading cause of death in these remote areas.
Thanks to the Children’s Medical Foundation and the faculty of Children’s Hospital of Fudan University, we’ve gained advanced skills and guidance to strengthen neonatal care in Tianshui. With this support, we’re saving more newborn lives and building a healthier future for our tiniest patients.
