Every Baby Rescued

For nearly three decades CMF has worked to shape and network our foundation of 102 neonatal program sites serving a community of 22 million families. By 2030, the “Every Baby Rescued” initiative will triple the reach of CMF trained doctors and nurses bringing emergency newborn healthcare closer to an additional 50 million families in rural parts of Western and Central China.

”Every Baby Rescued” is a bold plan made feasible through your generosity, and CMF program expertise and partnerships to rapidly scale access to locally appropriate neonatal care and strengthen the healthcare systems serving China’s most vulnerable population – newborn babies.

Step 1: HUB Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Goals: During this 18-month program, 2 doctors and 2 nurses each receive 6 months of neonatal medical training at National Level Children’s Hospital. Meanwhile, their team establishes or enhances the NICU at their home hospital with donated equipment, but mostly through hospital self-funded equipment and infrastructure.

Step 2: SPOKE Neonatal Resuscitation & Emergency Baby Care (NRE) Goals: During this 24-month program, 6 medical staff from the Hub NICU train in emergency baby care and become Master Trainers in the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) through the Internationally recognized program from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Four sessions train 120 medical staff from 30 hospitals; eight on-site visits by Master Trainers to rural hospitals and Refresher Training at the NICU reinforce learning and ensure doctors and nurses are confident to apply what they have learnt.

Step 3: SPOKE Mobile Emergency Response Unit (MERU) Goals: This 24-month program connects rural health facilities with the Hub NICU. With official authorization, notice of service commencement is circulated to rural medical facilities, where processes are modified and staff are prepared for deployment.

Step 4: SPOKE County Neonatal Care Unit (CNCU) Goals: Over a 12-month period, 1 doctor and 1 nurse each from 5 counties receive 6 months of neonatal medical training at Provincial Level Children’s Hospital. The combination of training, equipment and management protocol improvement ensures healthcare is accessible for families in remote areas and aligns with policies to establish rescue centers in rural areas.

Step 5: CMF’s National Neonatal Network Conference & Accreditation (NNN) Goals: In rural hospitals, healthcare professionals often face challenges and limited resources. CMF’s NNN promotes information sharing and professional development. Biennially, the conference convenes CMF partners and program NICU and NCU hospitals for continuous learning and sustainable capacity building.
