Past Programs
CMF’s first project was in partnership with the then mayor of Shanghai, Mr. Jiang Zemin, and the Shanghai Government to establish the Shanghai Children’s Medical Centre (SCMC) as China’s first and then much needed specialized children medical centre. SCMC is now a leading child treatment, referral and training center in China, serving over 650,000 children per year. We have a continued partnership with SCMC as a valued training center for our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit program. More recently, we have also partnered with the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University, another leading children hospital in China, to secure on the ground medical expertise and support for our medical programs.

CMF worked with our partner organizations to provide treatment for poor or orphaned children living with life-threatening congenital diseases that could be cured for life by a single, timely surgery. A total of 173 lives have been saved through this fund.
Fellows from 12 western provinces and 3 northeastern provinces in China were selected annually to participate in a 1-year pediatric training program at the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center. The training program covered topics that are considered basic requirements in many developed countries but relatively unavailable in China. These fellows in turn committed to train at least 3 of their colleagues within one year after their return to their provinces. 143 pediatric personnel were directly trained and over 1,300 pediatric personnel were trained indirectly.
CMF partnered with local education bureaus to train university medical students to become “peer trainers” on HIV. These peer trainers trained 14,235 relatively high-risk high school students in Shanghai, as well as students in San Ming, Fujian Province and Bei Hai, Guangxi Province.
An operating theatre at the Shanghai Children’s Medical Centre was refurbished into a Pediatric Minimally Invasive Surgery Centre in 2007 for teaching, training and treatment. State-of-the-art video streaming allows the room to be used as a live teaching vehicle during surgeries and a large amount of data has been collected by the advanced image storage system for training purposes. More than 150 pediatric minimally surgeries have been performed in this operation room to-date.
